Summary
We are looking for a hands-on touring Technical Manager to advance, install and maintain Crime and Punishment across a varied mid-scale tour, leading each fit-up and get-out with a practical, calm approach.
More Details
Main responsibilities
- Advance the production with each venue using the tour technical specification, plans and schedule supplied by the Production Manager; identify access, staffing, pre-rig, power, rigging and local-equipment requirements in good time.
- Lead get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs, briefing and supervising venue crew and coordinating tasks with the CSM and DSM.
- Build and inspect the set from the agreed plans, and install the touring lighting, sound and show-control systems safely and consistently.
- Adapt the production to each venue while protecting the approved design, performance requirements, access provision and one-day opening schedule.
- Programme, operate and maintain QLab and ETC Eos systems as required by the final design and operating plan.
- Carry out technical checks before every performance and keep toured set, cables, equipment and consumables tested, labelled, organised and in good repair.
- Maintain technical paperwork, including venue notes, patch and focus information, equipment records, fault logs and any changes agreed with the Production Manager or designers.
- Lead technical troubleshooting during performances and alert the CSM and DSM immediately if a fault requires a hold or show stop. The CSM holds overall show-stop authority; the Technical Manager retains authority to stop unsafe technical work.
- Lead responsibility for Health and Safety on tour: apply production and venue risk assessments, safe systems of work, manual-handling controls and equipment inspection requirements; record and report incidents and near misses.
- Plan the load and support safe van movements so equipment is secure, accessible and protected in transit.
- Track technical consumables and agreed expenditure, supplying receipts and forecasts through the company’s procedures.
- Collect the production data needed for Theatre Green Book reporting and support reuse, repair, waste and end-of-tour records.
- Coordinate the final inventory, packing, returns and handover of set and technical equipment at the end of the tour.
What we are looking for
- Professional experience in technical or production stage management for touring theatre.
- Strong practical knowledge of stage electrics, sound, show control, scenic assembly and fault finding.
- Experience leading local crews through safe, time-limited fit-ups and get-outs.
- Confident use of QLab and ETC Eos, including programming, file management and touring adaptations.
- A sound understanding of risk assessment, manual handling, working at height, electrical safety and current theatre practice.
- Clear technical communication and the ability to keep accurate venue, equipment and maintenance records.
- A practical, collaborative manner and calm judgement under pressure.
Useful additional experience
- Ability to read and update CAD drawings.
- Relevant electrical, access-equipment, rigging or first-aid training.
- Healthy and Safety training and certification.
- Experience of Theatre Green Book reporting and lower-impact touring practice.
Working on the tour
The Technical Manager leads technical delivery and technical safety. The CSM leads the touring company and deck, and the DSM calls the show. The Production Manager remains available for advances, design or venue decisions that sit beyond the tour team’s delegated authority.
- All three touring roles will take part in get-ins, fit-ups, get-outs, packing and venue changeovers.
- The team will share driving of the tour van. A full UK driving licence and eligibility under the company’s motor insurance are required.
- Hours, breaks, overnight rest and driving will be planned in line with the applicable agreement and safe-working requirements. Any safety concern can be raised immediately, regardless of role.
- Travel, touring or relocation support will be provided in line with the contract and the applicable agreement, subject to eligibility.
