Overview of Role

Disney Theatrical Group is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Makeup Specialist with a strong background in theatrical makeup to join the backstage team for Disney’s The Greatest Showman on a fixed-term basis.

As a Make-Up Specialist, you’ll report to the Head and Deputy Head of (WHAM) Department. Your focus will be on the preparation, maintenance and continuity of the make-up for the cast, while helping to deliver the show’s visual artistry, ensuring a smooth and efficient backstage operation during rehearsals and performances.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Apply, maintain, and remove make-up to a high level for performers according to creative direction of the Make-Up Designer and Head of WHAM.
  • Support quick changes and emergency touch-ups during rehearsals, understudy runs and performances.
  • Responsible for maintaining all make-up aspects of the production.
  • Assist the WHAM team with any day-to-day changes that might impact the running of the production, including make-up adjustments, character continuity, and quick-change requirements.
  • Assist the Head of WHAM by liaising between the Company Manager, Technical departments, Creative Team, Production and General Management Teams to ensure the smooth running of all rehearsals and performances.
  • Perform daily make-up setup, pre-sets, any cast make-up replenishment needs and provide clear communication with regards to make-up within the WHAM team.
  • Ensure awareness of understudy and swing performances ahead of each show and make necessary adjustments.
  • Attend rehearsal, technical, dress and understudy rehearsals as required.
  • Report and feedback show and staff-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Work in full compliance with Disney’s Health and Safety Policy and maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and best practices
  • Making sure products for the cast are replenished
  • Responsible for make-up plots and the make-up bible i.e photographs, product adjustments and usage.

What We’re Looking For:

Please note: Professional makeup artistry experience is essential — this is not a trainee or graduate position.

  • Make-up Specialty: Apply and maintain specialised make-up techniques, including:
    – Application of bald caps and tattoos.
    – Scar application and other special FX.
    – Running transfer appliances.
  • Make-Up Knowledge: Understanding of theatrical makeup and application techniques, including fashion and stage-specific products. Confident in applying makeup quickly and effectively in high-pressure, fast-moving environments.
  • Background: Experience in a similar role within a large-scale musical production, particularly those involving international casts and the opening of new shows, is highly desirable.
  • Wigs & Hair: Knowledge of wig/hair styling across all hair types is desirable
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cast, creatives, and crew
  • Health & Safety Awareness: Sound understanding of health and safety practices in a backstage environment

  • Hours: 48 hours per week
  • Schedule: Tuesday to Sunday (evening and weekend show schedule)
  • Health & Safety: This role will require the candidate to understand and follow the Health and Safety Rules & Regulations at the production.
