Head of Stage

Reporting to the Technical Director, you will manage the Stage team and freelance staff, overseeing the planning and delivery of work on both the Main Stage and Studio. You will work closely with Production Managers, designers and visiting companies to support ambitious productions from rehearsals through to performances and get-outs.

This role combines leadership, technical expertise and hands-on delivery. You will be responsible for maintaining stage and flying systems, managing budgets, supporting Health & Safety compliance, and ensuring the highest standards of stage practice.

We are looking for a strong people manager and communicator with extensive experience in theatre stage operations, including rigging and scenic construction. You will bring a collaborative approach, attention to detail and the ability to support teams and creatives in a busy producing environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading the Stage team and freelance contractors in planning and delivering productions and events
• Recruiting staff and ensuring appropriate skills and experience are in place
• Assisting the Technical Director and Production Managers with planning and delivery
• Supporting team development and progression
• Overseeing get-ins and get-outs of stage and flying equipment
• Managing departmental and show budgets
• Supporting the day-to-day running of shows and stage activity
• Ensuring stage and flying systems are safe, maintained and compliant
• Supporting delivery of Health & Safety requirements
• Maintaining safe and legal working practices

Person Specification

• Experienced people manager and strong communicator
• Organised, detail-focused and solution-oriented
• Excellent knowledge of theatre production practice and stage systems
• Strong leadership, collaboration and technical skills
• Experience managing teams, leading fit-ups/get-outs and working with designers and production teams
• Good understanding of Health & Safety and safe working practices
