Access All Areas is a referral-based project designed to remove barriers that prevent young people from engaging with the arts. Through theatre and creative activities, we aim to empower participants, build self-esteem, and provide a supportive community. Sessions are intentionally kept small to create a relaxed environment suitable for those who may not feel comfortable in mainstream Youth Theatre settings.
We are looking for an Assistant (either the same person for both or two different people) for:
- Ages 8-11: sessions held on Mondays at The Place.
- Access All Areas Explore: for teenagers with additional needs and/or learning disabilities, sessions are held on Thursdays at Tang Hall Explore.
Primary Objectives
To assist the Practitioner in organising and facilitating the Access All Areas session once a week throughout the summer term.
To provide individualised support, adapting to the diverse needs of young people in the group.
To promote accessibility and inclusion, working as part of a team to ensure that each young person is fully supported and engaged in the sessions.
To act as a positive role model, demonstrating enthusiasm, empathy, and encouragement throughout the sessions.
To work alongside the Practitioner to prioritise the wellbeing and safety of all participants.
Location
Mondays, 5pm – 6:30pm
The Place Sanderson House, Bramham Road, Acomb, York, YO26 5AR.
and/or
Thursdays, 5pm – 6:15pm
Tang Hall Explore Library, The Centre @ Burnholme, Mossdale Avenue, York, YO31 0HA.
Please note, the Assistant must make their own way to the venue where the sessions are held and be in attendance 15 minutes prior to and 15 minutes after each session.
Job Requirements
Main Duties
To assist the Practitioner in delivering the Access All Areas session.
To support the set-up of the workshop room and preparation of resources.
Register participants, ensuring compliance with York Theatre Royal’s GDPR protocols.
Lead warm-up games if confident in doing so.
Collect and assist latecomers.
Supervise small group activities.
Provide individualised 1:1 support to group members.
Direct scenes with the group as required.
Accompany the group on trips when appropriate.
Undertake any other reasonable duties as required.
Terms and Conditions
Term dates: week commencing 21 April to week commencing 30 June 2025 (except 26 May).
Hourly rate: £11.44 per hour, paid monthly in arrears on submission of a timesheet
York Theatre Royal has a Safeguarding Policy, which all staff and volunteers are expected to abide by.
Person Specification
Experience working with children, young people, or adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
A passion for drama, theatre, and the arts.
Understanding of different learning needs, disabilities, and neurodiversity, including autism, ADHD, sensory needs, and physical disabilities.
Knowledge of inclusive practice and strategies to support engagement and participation.
Awareness of safeguarding.
Adaptability and flexibility in responding to individual and group needs.
Strong communication skills, including adapting language, instructions, and support to meet individual needs.
Confidence in facilitating small group activities or leading warm-up games if required.
Must clear an enhanced DBS check
