Success for British theatre at 2025 Tony Awards nominations 

British theatre has triumphed in this year’s Tony Award nominations demonstrating the depth of world-class theatre that is being produced in the UK. The nominations include a number of productions which had great success at the 2024 Olivier Awards with Mastercard. They also include an astonishing 21 Tony nominations, and a Special Tony Award, for powerhouse producer Sonia Friedman who has multiple productions running across the West End and Broadway.  

The 2025 Tony Award nominations include:  

  • Seven nominations for The Hills of California written by Jez Butterworth and produced by Sonia Friedman which premiered in London at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The nominations include Best Play, Best Direction of a Play for Sam Mendes, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for Laura Donnelly. Hills of California was nominated for Best New Play and Best Actress in a Play for Laura Donnelly at the 2024 Olivier Awards. 
  • Seven nominations for Jamie Lloyd’s production of Sunset Blvd which had its original run at the Savoy Theatre and won seven awards at the 2024 Oliviers. It’s Tony nominations include Best Revival of a Musical, Best Orchestrations for David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Best Direction of a Musical for Jamie Lloyd, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Nicole Scherzinger, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Tom Francis.  
  • Four nominations for Operation Mincemeat which ran at the New Diorama Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, and Riverside Studios before its ongoing West End run. It’s Tony nominations include Best Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Jak Malone who won the Olivier Award in 2024. Operation Mincemeat also won the Olivier for Best New Musical.  
  • Five nominations for Stranger Things: The First Shadow which was produced by Sonia Friedman and had its world premiere at the Phoenix Theatre. It went onto win the 2024 Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play. Its Tony nominations include Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Louis McCartney as well as a Special Tony Award which will be presented to The Illusions & Technical Effects team.  
  • Six nominations for Picture of Dorian Gray which transferred from the Theatre Royal Haymarket including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for Sarah Snook who won the 2024 Olivier Award.  
  • Seven nominations for Dead Outlaw produced by Sonia Friedman including Best Musical. 
  • Two nominations for Eureka Day, including Best Revival, which was co-produced by Sonia Friedman and ran at the Old Vic in 2022.
