SOLT & UK Theatre respond to TfL consultation on pedicabs

Commenting on the outcome of TfL’s consultation on pedicabs, SOLT & UK Theatre Co-CEO Hannah Essex said:

“We welcome TfL’s commitment to regulating pedicabs, following overwhelming public support. With over 7,000 responses, Londoners have made their views clear: 75% do not feel safe using pedicabs, and 96% want controls on music.

“Theatres are increasingly affected by large numbers of pedicabs gathering outside venues – often driving on pavements and obstructing safe exits. At peak times, up to 30 vehicles can block egress, creating serious crowding and posing risks in an emergency.

“In some cases, loud music from pedicabs can also be heard inside auditoriums, disrupting the audience experience.

“We urge TfL to accelerate the timeline for implementation. Regulation is currently not expected until 2026, but this is an urgent public safety issue – particularly as we approach the busy Christmas season. We stand ready to work with TfL on the details, but faster action is essential.”
