Responding to The Stage’s recent article on theatres’ preparedness for extreme heat, SOLT & UK Theatre Co-CEO Claire Walker said:
“It’s simply not accurate to suggest that theatres are unprepared for extreme heat.
“Across the country, venues have taken proactive steps to manage rising temperatures – investing in improved ventilation, upgrading cooling systems, and adapting working practices to ensure the safety and comfort of audiences, performers, and staff. Front-of-house, auditorium, and backstage temperatures are routinely monitored, with management teams planning ahead to respond to changing conditions.
“However, upgrading heating and cooling systems does require forward planning and significant capital – especially as most last 20–25 years. Many theatres are also working to decarbonise in line with Theatre Green Book standards, but retrofitting is often costly and complex, particularly in older or listed buildings.
“That’s why long-term investment is essential – and why SOLT & UK Theatre continue to call for a national strategy for cultural infrastructure. Theatres are vital public assets, and ensuring they are climate resilient must be a shared national priority.”
