Theatre Technician Apprentice

Summary

A theatre technician is a behind-the-scenes professional who ensures the smooth operation of a theatrical production by managing and operating various technical aspects. Responsibilities can include lighting, sound, rigging, set construction, and stage management.

More Details

Our apprenticeship offers hands-on training for those beginning a career as a theatre technician. It’s ideal for someone interested in Technical Theatre who thrives on learning by doing. This opportunity supports those who may not have access to the arts or who seek an alternative route into theatre, including individuals facing barriers to entering or completing a university degree.

The Rep has three technical departments: Lighting, Stage, and Sound/Video, managed by the Technical Manager. Lighting has five full-time staff, Stage has four, and Sound/Video has three. Each department has a Head and a Deputy. Our Apprentice Technician will rotate through all departments and be supported by a learning coach from the Apprenticeship provider.

The role includes 20% off-the-job training, such as online learning with other Apprentice Technicians, attending industry events, and networking with professionals. You’ll also complete the Association of British Theatre Technicians Bronze Award qualification.

This Creative Venue Technician apprenticeship is 18 months in duration with the final 3 months completing the end point assessment through a final project, portfolio assessment and professional conversation about their work and skills with an assessor.

Our Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about theatre and excited to dive into the world of technical theatre. You might already love getting stuck into hands-on tasks, enjoy figuring out how things work, and take pride in being a reliable team player. You’ll need to be comfortable managing your time well, working independently when needed, and always keeping safety in mind for yourself and those around you. A friendly, positive attitude and great communication skills will go a long way in helping you build strong working relationships and really make the most of this opportunity.

It’s a bonus if you’ve had some experience in theatre already—maybe through school, college, or a local group—including set building, sound systems, or lighting. If you have a full driving licence, that’s great too. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who’s 18 or over, enthusiastic, and ready to roll up their sleeves and be part of a hard-working, creative team. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!
