Summary

Arcola Theatre is seeking a skilled, passionate and organised individual to be our Technical Manager. To provide management of the department and technical support for all Arcola produced and co-produced shows and support visiting companies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Productions

  • Working with Directors and creative teams for all Arcola productions to ensure the highest possible technical and artistic standards are met within available budgets
  • Working with the General Manager to plan all technical staffing schedules for productions
  • Attending get-ins and get-outs for Arcola productions
  • Ensuring complete and timely get-out of all productions including waste management, returns and tidying
  • Supporting Arcola Participation with community productions

Visiting Companies (incl Events & Commercial Hires)

  • Liaising with visiting companies to ensure the technical needs of visiting productions are provided to the highest possible standards
  • Ensuring that accurate Technical Specifications including ground and rigging plans for all spaces are readily available

Technical Equipment

  • Ability to use and troubleshoot all Arcola equipment 
  • Ability to programme lighting
  • Knowledge of theatre sound equipment
  • Purchasing, borrowing and hiring technical equipment as required 
  • Ensuring the habitual upkeep of stage and workshop equipment, including statutory annual inspections (PAT) and regular maintenance

Staff Management

  • Line managing all permanent, temporary and casual technical staff
  • Developing effective and rewarding technical volunteer, apprentice and intern programmes to build the department for the long term
  • Scheduling technical staff and setting the rota within agreed budget constraints and with the General Manager
  • Supporting the General Manager in conducting appraisals and assessing the training needs of technical staff and making recommendations for further training
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of all technical staff and complying with statutory and company health & safety regulations
  • Adhering to and actively driving equal opportunities policy within the department and in all aspects of the department’s work

Licensing, Health & Safety

  • Keeping abreast of current Licensing and Health & Safety legislation
  • Detailed knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Supporting the General Manager with licensing with statutory bodies regarding Licensing and Health & Safety submissions and inspections
  • Supporting the General Manager with maintenance of safety equipment 
  • Working with the General Manager in completing risk assessments for productions, tours and events as required

Other Duties

  • Supporting the aims and objectives of Arcola Theatre internally and externally
  • Responsible for overseeing minor building maintenance throughout Arcola Theatre in collaboration with the General Manager and Facilities staff
  • Undertaking any other duties as may be appropriate
  • Attending Press Night performances of Arcola produced productions 
  • Supporting Arcola Theatre’s green initiatives and working towards both studios being energy efficient 
  • This role requires flexibility including evening and weekend work for events, as scheduled
  • Participate in all training and development initiatives as required
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
