Main Duties
The cutting and construction of costumes under the instruction of the Head of Wardrobe or Designer
To supply work to the Wardrobe Assistants
To prepare fabrics for use in construction
To prepare shoes, hats, wigs and other costume items
The dyeing and breaking down costumes as required
To carry out the fitting of costumes and making alterations and notes as appropriate
Setting and striking of costumes between the Theatre, Wardrobe & Costume Hire and the rehearsal rooms as required
To help create costume for Youth Theatre productions as required.
Person Specification
Essential
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a producing theatre
Excellent cutting and making skills
Good knowledge of garment cutting and construction both
period and modern
The ability to work accurately under pressure
A problem solver, with creative flair and a willingness to go the extra mile
The ability to meet deadlines
A flexible attitude
The ability to work evenings and weekends as required
A genuine interest in theatre and costume
Ability to work with others
Desirable
Knowledge of dyeing / breaking down techniques
A full, clean driving licence
A sense of humour
This is a full time role starting 01 May 2026
Hours are annualised at 2080 hours per annum, worked flexibility to meet the needs of York Theatre Royal. Hours may vary depending on patterns of work required. Evening and weekend work may on occasion be required
Annual Salary: £29,536. (The salary will be paid monthly.)
Probationary period: 3 months
Holiday Entitlement: 224 hours per annum
Notice Period Required: 1 month in the probationary period, 2 months thereafter.
