Technical Stage Manager
Salary: £1,100 per week (£1,000 per week for rehearsals)
Contract: Fixed Term SOLT/Equity Contract
Contract Dates: 24th February – 2nd August 2025 (plus possible extension)
Rehearsals (London): 24th February – 30th March 2025
Tech: 31st March – 13th April 2025
Performances: 14th April – 2nd August 2025
Possible Extension: 3rd August – 7th September 2025
Show schedule: Performances are 6 days per week, typically Tuesday – Sunday. The performance schedule during previews varies and shall be confirmed at point of contract.
Holiday: As per the SOLT/Equity Agreement (28 days per full calendar year)
Performance Location: Noel Coward Theatre, St Martin’s Lane, London WC2N 4AU

Personal attributes: We are looking for applicants with demonstrable Stage Management experience on an equivalent West End/touring show. The role requires someone who has excellent technical knowledge and a calm and practical approach to troubleshooting. Candidates must also have previous experience of managing a department and the ability to work flexibly in high pressure environments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To manage the work of the stage management department across rehearsals, tech and performances of the Production;
- To attend any meetings and training sessions as required in advance of rehearsals or the Production start date;
- To run the rehearsal room for the duration of rehearsals for the Production, ensuring that stage and rehearsal environments are set-up and maintained as required with appropriate set, props, and other effects as necessary;
- Managing the day-to-day running of the on-stage elements and stage area of the Production including all rehearsals and performances;
- Performing the Stage Manager plot(s) as required, potentially including some onstage cues;
- Learning other plots within your department and providing absence cover for other
- members of your department as necessary;
- To schedule, supervise and run cover rehearsals/put in rehearsals across the Production;
- Recording, monitoring and collating the hours of the stage management team in conjunction, submitting timesheets and rotas in good time to the Company Manager as required;
- Reporting to the Company Manager and the General Managers any issues relating to the performance and/or welfare of stage management, show staff and cast;
- To assist with compiling and distributing show reports;
- To deputise for the Company Manager in their absence, as required;
- To work collaboratively with all other departments, including the theatre technical team, to ensure the smooth running of the production and rehearsals;
- Leading on weekly maintenance schedules and ensuring that all fixes are completed to a high standard or reported to the Production Manager;
- Sourcing and making props as required;
- To be a proactive member of the Stage Management team and support the wider team;
- Directly manage the DSM, ASM and ASM Book Cover in conjunction with the Company Manager;
- Jointly manage the Tech Swing;
- Ensure all stage management equipment and backstage areas are kept in a tidy and secure manner;
- To manage (and recruit if necessary) a pool of department Deps, ensuring that they have
been properly trained and are kept up to date with all required department plots;
- Training and supervising Deps as required;
- To compile and keep up-to-date all necessary show paperwork both hard copy and digital;
- Working in accordance with the Producer’s Health and Safety policy, which may include any
training deemed necessary, to keep up to date logs and lists of equipment for both show and
backstage electrical owned and hired equipment, to include overseeing yearly PAT testing;
- Identifying hazards and contributing to risk assessments for the Production;
- Have good working knowledge of all risk assessments and method statements for the Production and making sure all stage management, show staff and cast understand and comply with all relevant risk assessments and method statements;
- Having a practical understanding of the Producer’s employment policies and demonstrating a willingness to comply with these policies;
- To account for and support the administration of petty cash for Stage Management department spends, obtaining where possible VAT invoices for any hires and purchases made through petty cash;
- Any other reasonable duty that would normally fall within the remit of a Technical Stage Manager based on industry norms and practice.
Person Specification:
- Demonstrable professional experience working in a similar role in the West End or on Tour;
- Knowledge and experience of the working practices of a West End production;
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with excellent attention to detail;
- Strong all-round technical background with particular knowledge of Stage and Automation, with a proven track record of delivering a high standard of production;
- Proactive and flexible attitude, with the ability to work with commitment and dedication to find solutions as required;
- Experience of working with creative teams and the ability to manage expectations;
- Ability to work under pressure and effectively prioritise;
- A calm and practical approach to trouble shooting and problem solving;
- Discretion and sensitivity when dealing with confidential information;
- Experience of working on a new production;
- Proven experience of managing a team;
- Awareness of current Health & Safety legislation including LOLER, RA and Working at Height;
- Awareness of current SOLT/Equity Union Agreements.
