Preventing Harassment in the Workplace

In October 2024, new legislation (Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023) is coming into force which requires employers to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment of employees.

We held a member webinar on 15 July to help make members aware of the Worker Protection Act 2023, their obligations under the Act, and how they can prepare. Members can view a recording of the webinar below, and download a template harassment policy to adapt and use. You will need to read through the policy carefully, and make amends relevant to your own organisation. In September 2024, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) updated their Sexual harassment and harassment at work: technical guidance. Alongside its guidance, the EHRC has published an Employer 8-step guide: preventing sexual harassment at work which sets out the types of preventative action employers might take. This includes the recommendation that employers have a written risk assessment, which assesses the factors that might increase the likelihood of sexual harassment and the steps that can be taken to mitigate the risk.

Creative UK have developed an e-learning module ‘It’s Not OK’ in partnership with SOLT & UK Theatre and other creative industry bodies. It is designed to raise awareness of bullying and harassment in our sector and help prevent incidents. It also offers guidance to where and whom people can approach for help.

ACAS have comprehensive guidance for both employers and individuals on discrimination, bullying and harassment in the workplace.
