Why Am I So Single – Tech Swing (Short Term Cover)

Summary

Kenny Wax Productions and Ameena Hamid Productions are looking for a motivated Technical Swing (Short Term Cover) to cover a pre-contractual absence for Why Am I So Single? at the Garrick Theatre. The successful candidate will have relevant and transferrable experience as Tech Swing or equivalent on similar productions, and must have the right to live and work in the UK. The Tech Swing will work across the backstage departments as needed in the running and maintenance of this brand new West End musical, including LX and Sound to meet the needs of the show.

Contract Type: Full-time, fixed-term.
Dates of Employment: 29th October 2024 until Sunday 26th January 2025.
Typical show schedule (subject to change): 7:30pm Tuesday – Sunday, 2:30pm Saturday and Sunday. Some variation in schedule across the Christmas weeks.
Salary: Above SOLT/BECTU minimums based on 8 performances a week, plus Sunday Performance payments.
Responsible To: Company Manager, Head of Sound and General Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working across the LX and sound departments as needed to ensure the smooth running of the production, both in pre-production and running.
  • Assisting with pre-show checks, maintenance and stage preparations as instructed.
  • Maintaining the production as dictated by the creative team.
  • Working alongside all technical departments, stage management, the cast and creatives to ensure the efficient flow of information as needed for the smooth running of the show.
  • Attending all rehearsals, show calls, maintenance calls, get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs as required by the show staff and the Production Manager, including emergency calls in the event of equipment failure or other, particularly if there is a risk of cancellation.
  • Compiling and maintaining hard and soft show paperwork.
  • Working in accordance with the Producer’s Health and Safety policy, including any necessary training.
  • Complying at all times with the rules and regulations in force at the venues under the control of the production.
  • Having a practical understanding of the producer’s employment policies and demonstrating a willingness to comply with these policies.
  • Training and supervising new Deps as required.
  • Recognising where maintenance work needs to be carried out and reporting this to the relevant departments.
  • Learning other plots within the Stage Management, LX and Sound departments and providing absence cover as necessary.
  • Any other reasonable duty that would normally fall within the remit of a Tech Swing based on industry norms and practice.

Person Specification:

  • Demonstrable professional experience as Tech Swing on a production of a similar scale on tour/West End.
  • Previous followspotting experience (robo spot preferable but not essential).
  • Previous experience working on musicals or opera, with some score-reading ability.
  • Previous experience as a Sound No 2/Sound No 3, including fitting and trouble-shooting radio mics, and assisting in the set-up of band equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Eos programming.
  • Previous experience of maintaining set electrics including pixel.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • A calm and proactive approach to technical troubleshooting.
  • A strong understanding of comic timing.
  • Comfortable working with ladders and pyrotechnics (full training will be provided).
  • The ability to work well with actors and creative teams.
  • The ability to work under pressure and effectively prioritise.
  • Knowledge of SOLT/BECTU and Equity union agreements.
  • Awareness of current Health & Safety legislation including COSHH.
