The Costume Production department is based within The National Theatre at London’s Southbank.
We have a vacancy for a key role within the Costume Department. Working under the Head Ladies Cutter, the Deputy needs to have an understanding of all costume projects in production as well as on the horizon. Planning and time lines are vital to our success ensuring the shows receive the optimum quality and quantity of making time and that the work on stage is of the highest standard. We need a Deputy Ladies Cutter who will bring these skills to the role.
The Costume Workroom employs eight permanent members of staff who work together supporting all the making elements of a production; Alterations, Men’s Tailoring and Ladies Making. We pride ourselves on very high standards of work plus excellent communication between each other, our Freelance staff, Costume Supervisors and the Designers who come and work with us. Over a year we put on up to 24 shows set in numerous time periods with visually diverse costume designs and challenges. It is an exciting and creative place to work.
We regularly have casual makers working with us to increase our output at busy times. The Deputy Ladies Cutter will need to be the eyes and ears of the Head Ladies cutter; supervising the work of costume makers, work experience placements and the apprentice role. They will need cutting skills to work independently of the Head Cutter and be able to cover for them in their absence. We will expect you to have experience of carrying out and delegating projects with a minimum amount of supervision plus be able to take instruction.
As well as Industry cutting experience we are looking for excellent, accurate hand and machine sewing skills and a calm approach when working with Actors and Designer.
If you have the experience, talent and passion for the role we very much look forward to meeting you and discussing the position further.
